XVI Mediterranean Games
Pescara (ITA), June 26 – July 5, 2009
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, July 3, 2009: With two Gold and two Silver medals in their pocket from the first day of Apparatus Finals, France confirmed its predominance at the Artistic Gymnastics competition of the 16th Mediterranean Games in Pescara (ITA). However, the French gymnasts did not go unchallenged, and yesterday’s finals saw medals attributed to gymnasts from host country Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey and Spain.
On Men’s Floor, Eleftherios Kosmidis (GRE) defeated 2008 Olympic Pommel Horse runner-up Filip Ude (CRO) and Fabian Gonzalez (ESP), while Italy’s own Alberto Busnari took the Gold on Pommel Horse, relegating French Hamilton Sabot and Spanish Sergio Munoz to second and third place respectively. On Rings, Danny Pinheiro and Pierre-Yves Beny landed a double victory for France, carrying off Gold and Bronze. Beijing finalist Matteo Morandi (ITA) settled for Silver.
France’s rising star Youna Dufournet continued her winning streak at these Games and added two Gold medals to her collection in the Women’s Vault and Uneven Bars Final. Goksu garnered the first medal for Turkey on Vault. Her 13.650 point performance secured a Silver as she edged out Evgenia Zafeirraki (GRE). On Uneven Bars, Pauline Morel carried off Silver for France and Italian Paola Galante settled for Bronze.
